Five R'jpul clans, each numerically not small, which have come to our notice are Vantia, Jhikara. Karadia. Nadodra and Dodia. In this same order they form a vaguely hypergamous group. Vantias were originally Jhala Rajputs who surrendered their lands to Sultans of Ahmedabad keeping only strips (Vanti) of land.
Another informant says that they became landless and the rulers of Limbdi (Jhala) gave them strips of land (Vanti) and hence Vantias. Gujarat Sarvasangraha refers to Jeekaras as petty land owner Rajputs, who even labour in their fields but do not allow their women-folk to work."
The Jaikaras are said to be those who once sold themselves as mercenaries in the army of Rajput chiefs and were known as Jikaras since they submitted to such dependency binding themselves to say "jee" to the masters. TTie Karadias appear to be a much widespread and numerically the largest of the R'jput group.
Karadias are also mentioned as Rajputs who work with their women-folk in the fields. They are also referred to as 'Khedut' Rajputs (literally cultivators) who are numerous in the districts of Amrcli (Kodinar Taluka), Dandhuka, Palanpur, Sural, etc. A Jodhpur Rajput informant says that landless tiller Rajputs in Rajputana are called Karadias. Some Karadia informants say that as Rajputs, long ago, they did not yield to give their daughters to Muslims and had therefore to surrender their lands, but Rajputs who gave daughters to Muslims could keep their lands and continue to be the land-owning Rajputs
According to Bhagwanlal Sampatram, those Rajputs who being harassed by Muslims accepted military service under them were known as Karadias . and those who took to agricultural occupations and had no obligations to render military service to them were called—of Naroda (Nadodras). The Nadodras are regarded as mild and timid as is exemplified in the proverb which says that a Nadodra should never be employed as a watchman or a bodyguard. Their tradition for military service being too remote having given up their arms, it is possible that such a saying became current
The Dodiyas in Saurashira were originally a clan of Rajputs wilhoul any political power and it appears that the whole clan was regarded as degraded Rajputs or R'jputs. Clans without a political head would obviously be predisposed to lose their land and its fragmentation with unproductive expenditure must have hastened the process of decline.
The Karadias consists of several clans such as Chauhan, Rathod, Parmar, Gohil, More who intermarry, and wherever possible give their daughters to landowning Rajputs who are not very wealthy. Thus there are Rathod, Gohil, Parmar and Chauhan Karadias in Pachhegam, Piplia Vertej and Thordi respectively. Thus the Karadia daughters get hypergamous admission into the Rajput fold and their grand daughters are likely to get married high. Among the R'jputs the Vantias appear to be the highest, the Jheekaras the next, the Karadias the third and below them in order are Nadodras and Dodiyas...
